Official Word from Apple: Not Until the Second Half of July

In an unceremonious press release, Apple announced that the white iPhone 4 will not be available until sometime in the second half of July due to manufacturing challenges.

Apple's announcment comes late to the party, with little more than a few hours to go before people really start lining up in droves.  Hopefully the news will be disseminated rapidly to Apple store employees and line-waiters to preven too much confusion and wasted time.

It is interesting that in Apple's press release is that it claims the black iPhone 4 is more popular.  Rarely will you see a company take a shot at its own product, so they really must be trying to keep people from getting to excited about white lest it damage the reputation of the black one they're getting ready to start selling tomorrow.

Also interesting is Apple's statement that it is more challenging than expected to manufacture a white iPhone 4.  One wonders just what goes into the white iPhone 4 that makes it such a challenge to produce?  Just what makes it white anyway, angel's tears and unicorn teeth?

In light of this news, the idea of waiting in line for one seems nigh ridiculous.  Yet, I'll leave the poll up in case any of you are very brave souls who think Apple's stores will defy its own press release.  Any thoughts?  Comment away!

Also, thanks to several posters for the link to Apple's statement.  You can see it on Apple's website here.
